new UK Laplander owner

Rekommendera Poster

I have recently started the project of rebuilding C202 in the UK. I believe there are about 6 in UK. It was imported in 1978. but I would like to know the year of manufacture. Can I tell this from the number on the plate on bulkhead behind seats?

This C202 has no gearbox and no transfer box. I am in Sweden at present and I have got a M45 gearbox and secondhand transfer box. I am not confident they will fit. What issues can I expect? Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks member Andreas. E for downloads of manuals but would prefer in English.

With regard to the previous post, the engine is the B20a. The transfer box fits ok on the splines of the M45. I need to ship the boxes to England to check other issues. Any suggestion with regard to shipping would help. I am taking the bell housing home in my suitcase, i suspect I will have issues with converting to the hydraulic clutch system and the gear change control which at present on the M45 is just a short right angle stub with a ball shaped top. There must have been some mechanism that connects this stub to the C202 rod gear. Maybe a gear stick from some Volvo model.  I am also finding it difficult to locate replacement clutch and brake master cylinders, what vehicle did they originate from? I may be able to rebuild with a repair kit but the bores look a bit rusty.

Thanks for your attention.

Attached photos of cylinders.

Brake cylinder is marked 28 34 FAG S5204 ( or could be a 6).
Clutch , FAG S5198.

What about changing the brake master cylinder to something else?

I will do like Kjell Niklasson here att the forum did, he took a brake cylinder from Mercedes W124, I don´t know what that is, but I bought one from him.

He has some pictures here: Kjenik if you step backwards in the photos you will also see that he changed brakes from drum brakes to disckbrakes (google translate, don´t know if it´s correct) and I will do that too.

Maybe the Mercedes brake cylinder suit disc brakes better than drums, but I don´t know.

I have no idea what to do with the clutch cylinder, I´m glad as long mine works. Hopefully it´s possible to repair it.

Do you have the spare parts catalouge? There you can see what´s missing in the linkage to the gearbox.

The clutch master cylinder from Volvo Amazon fits. But the connection for the pipe is different. It can be seen on the picture linked by Rookien. I think clutch slave cylinder from Amazon fits also.

The gear linkage is special for C202 as far as i know. There might be some pictures of it, in the photo album linked above (my car). If needed, i can fix better pictures of it.

I dont think the Mercedes brake cylinder goes well with drum brakes. Its to small diameter of the cylinder. Original master brake cylinder of C202 is quite big.

Thanks for replies.

Very impressed with your rebuild Rookien. I looked at your photos.

I can not rebuild to that standard but hope to rebuild my Laplander so that it is reliable and usable.

The brake cylinder must have been in production for some vehicle. I know that Volvo used parts from different vehicles. There are some brake parts sourced from Landrover which is no problem for me as they are plentiful and cheap in the UK.

Thanks Kjell, could not work out how to see the photos of the gear linkage. Maybe you could let me have some pictures.

Hoping to download a spares cataloge.

Thanks for now

The gear linkage can be seen on some of the pictures, but not very good. Here are some better pictures i took yesterday:

Do you have any pictures of your Laplander to show us?

I do have the linkage shown in the pictures, thanks. Perhaps it will become evident when I get home next week how it fits.

I have attached a picture of the vehicle in my small yard. ( just enough room to walk round it to work on it. You Swedes are so lucky to have plenty of space). The laplander had been standing for 25 years without the gearboxes. I was told it was barn stored but realised when I took delivery that it had been outside all that time. Lesson learned! I have better pictures on my computer at home.

Also I attach picture of the previous vehicle I finished which was a lot simpler!

I will download the catalogues when I have a better internet connection.

I also notice from the pictures that the routing of the vacuum pipes is different. I have a valve/solenoid device mounted on the chassis with a T link. One pipe from that goes back to the cross chassis member. Is that bit of the chassis some sort of tank? I presume one pipe leads forward to the exhaust manifold and the bottom pipe goes to the transfer box. On the transfer box there is a vacuum diaphram mechanism with a pipe leading from it and also in the same area a smaller pipe coming off. Is the smaller pipe just a breather?

That's enough for tonight. thank you.

Your C202 doesn't look to bad. Mine was a lot worse.

My car is a mix of various parts, so i have changed the vacuum quite a bit. It is not original on my car. My car is a Volvo 3314 frame. Also axles and body is 3314. Gearbox, transfercase and doors is from C202. Engine is Mercedes 190d. So there is not much original on my car. Pipes and hoses may not be routed like original.

Yes there is breather hoses, i think there are two, or mayby three from the gearbox/transfercase.

There is a vacuum tank in the frame. The 4x4 deactivation is vacuum controlled. With vacuum, no 4x4, only rear wheel drive.

If your car still got it, the power take-out on the transfercase and the winch is also vacuum controlled.

I replaced brake master cylinder with something totally different... Audi A4 B5. It's a tight fit and needs some works but possible to do. Brakes seems to work quite ok. C202 does not have much room under dashboard. I'll try to make some pictures tomorrow.

I found one picture.

post-7478-0-43403700-1415731956_thumb.jpg

I am about to start collecting the parts so that i can start the rebuild next year

I think it is all original, with rust to prove its age

Some parts are missing but i drove it to where it is stored.

I am in Kent in the uk

If you need to see the linkage as it is mounted you can send me a message

Hi Sergeant

It looks good in the sun, but there is lots to do so that it will be reliable

and lots of welding to make sure your feet stay inside the cabin

The winch is original to the truck i think, because the guides for the cable are all still on the chassis frame and go both ways

this means that you can recover from the front or back

I got the truck from a English guy who has lived in Sweden for 25 years or more.

The truck would not make the return journey without a lot of work, so i bought it.

Under the truck you can just make out the bottom of the winch drum, and the 'oil catch bucket'

Thanks for the welcome
